Decommissioning and sustainable removal of 140 workstations and all loose furniture from Level 37, 121 Exhibition Street, Melbourne.

Challenge

The client required the efficient and environmentally responsible removal of a large volume of office furniture, with a focus on maximizing recycling and reuse to minimize landfill waste.

Solution

• Workstation Top Repurposing: While the workstation tops were deemed unsuitable for direct resale, our team devised an innovative solution. They were repurposed into durable “melamine recycle boxes.” These boxes are now used to efficiently transport flat-packed melamine furniture to Sydney for processing into new melamine products, creating a closed-loop recycling system.
• Clerical Chair Reuse: All clerical chairs in good condition were integrated into Egan’s existing inventory, ensuring their continued use and diverting them from the waste stream.
• Comprehensive Recycling: All remaining furniture items were processed through our established recycling channels, ensuring responsible disposal.

Results

• Significant Landfill Diversion: Achieved a 94% landfill avoidance rate, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable practices.
• Material Circularity: 8 tons of melamine were repurposed, facilitating more efficient internal reuse processes and supporting the circular economy.
• Enhanced Reuse: 150 clerical chairs were successfully redirected from recycling to reuse/resale streams, extending their lifespan and reducing the need for new production.
• Efficient Project Delivery: The entire project was completed within 5 business days, minimizing disruption for the client.
• Timely Reporting: A comprehensive project report, detailing the recycling and reuse outcomes, was delivered within 10 days.
